I have Office 2016 installed on my hard drive and, when in SharePoint, you should be able to open a document either online or using the program installed on the hard drive.  I am able to open Excel and Word documents online in SharePoint  but I cannot get either Word or Excel documents to open using Office 2016 on my hard drive.

I wonder if this is a known problem and can be fixed.

You will need to get the site administrator to check that the site collection feature Open Documents in Client Applications by Default is set to Active.
