During a send and receive, Outlook makes a POST to lists.asmx using the GetListItemChangesSinceToken method.  Part of the data returned by the web service is "AlternateUrls". But for the Outlook requests, the AAMs are sent in the following order.

It appears that Outlook just uses the first "AlternateUrls" in the list.  So if the Intranet zone is populated, it will use that.  If not, it will use the Default zone.
